My CEEPUS Journey:

A Month of Academic and Cultural Discovery in Pécs (by Natalia Kowerek, first-year Master’s student in Global Studies)

When I first learned about the CEEPUS program – the Central European Exchange Program for University Studies – I saw it as a great academic opportunity. This was my second Ceepus mobility. The first time I went to Ljubljana, Slovenia, for a month, and each of these trips was unique in its own way and enriched my academic and personal development. I never imagined, though, just how transformative a one-month stay in Pécs, Hungary, would become.

As a first-year Master’s student in the Global Studies program taught in English at my university, I applied for a short-term mobility under CEEPUS and was accepted by the University of Pécs. From the moment I arrived, I was immersed in a vibrant academic atmosphere. I attended lectures that complemented and deepened my understanding of core subjects from my own field of study. More importantly, the time I spent there became crucial to the development of my master’s thesis—I had the space to plan my research, collect valuable data, and refine the direction and themes of my paper.

Living in Pécs, a city steeped in historical and cultural heritage, added a whole new dimension to my stay. I joined  a lot of international student events, including a memorable Country Presentation on Bangladesh organized by the Erasmus Student Network (ESN). These gatherings were more than just social activities—they opened my eyes to diverse perspectives and helped foster genuine intercultural dialogue crucial to my study program in Poland.

Exploring Hungary was equally enriching. From walking through the majestic halls of Siklós Castle, to taking in the sights and energy of Budapest, every experience added depth to my understanding of the region. The mountainous landscapes surrounding Pécs also encouraged me to step outside, hike, and enjoy nature—an energizing contrast to time spent in lecture halls.

What made the biggest impact, however, was the international student community I became a part of. Sharing ideas, stories, and ambitions with peers from across the whole globe created a space of mutual learning that went far beyond formal education. It reminded me why programs like CEEPUS are so valuable—they bring people together to learn with and from one another.

For anyone considering studying abroad, I cannot recommend CEEPUS enough. It’s more than a scholarship—it’s a platform for academic exploration, cultural immersion, and personal growth. Through this program, I gained knowledge, made lasting friendships, and returned with a broader view of the world—and of myself.
